Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a tabletop role-playing game focused on collaborative storytelling – there’s no winning or losing. Each player assumes the role of a character with powerful abilities, and players can customize their characters to fit their preferences. As the game progresses, players must work together to defeat monsters, solve puzzles, and find treasure, while the Game Master (GM) acts as a referee/moderator and sets the scene for the players. Research has demonstrated D&D’s effectiveness as a format for kids' social therapy groups, given the inherent collaboration and communication necessary for the players to navigate different game situations. This therapy group aims to help kids develop social understanding through experience while learning from each other in a fun, supportive environment.
If your 12-13 year-old child is imaginative, enjoys fantasy, and/or struggles in social situations, they may be a good fit for this group. If your child has completed groups focused on social skills training in the past, this group offers a unique opportunity for them to practice these skills.
